The American Reading Crisis - Connecticut Library Association Virtual Conference

Last week I had the opportunity to present at the CLA Virtual Conference on the American Reading Crisis.

According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress, two-thirds of fourth graders are not reaching fluency benchmarks.  That is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of troubling facts - the crisis has deep and profound effects.

The hope is that by sharing information and resources widely, especially with librarians, we can change the trajectory. For those of you that were able to attend, thank you for your thoughtful questions and desire implement community solutions.

Librarians can make all the difference with awareness of how reading happens in the brain and why people struggle with reading acquisition. They can point those that struggle to helpful resources. Almost everyone can learn to read at an average or better level.  Early intervention is best but it is never too late. The mission of Letters are Characters is to share helpful insights, programs and information with libraries.  Please take a moment to opt in.  I will be sending sources to those that attended soon.

To Uplift Your Library Loving Heart...

"When It looked like the sun would not shine anymore God put a rainbow in the clouds

Look at that - look at that!  That's a library - a library is a rainbow in the clouds...

A Library is Hope, that is what a library is..."

- Dr. Maya Angelou

During a visit to the New York Public Library for an event in her honor, Maya Angelou talked about how libraries saved her life and how libraries are there for people during the darkest of times.  Click the link to hear this inspiring tribute. We need to make sure that people learn to read so that they can have access to the lifesaving power of libraries.
